In the calling song verses of 1–2 s duration often alternate with pauses of about 3–4 s. According to Ragge & Reynolds (1998) and sound files in Roesti & Keist (2009) the verses consist of sequences of disyllabic echemes with syllable repetition rates around 40 to 70 Hz and echeme repetition rates of 15 to 30 Hz (Fig. 7E1). In two other recordings the echeme structure of the song could not be identified (Table 1). However, animals from Ukraine obviously had a much lower syllable repetition rate. Their song did not show an echeme structure, but the syllable repetition rate agreed quite well with that of the echemes in the topotypical Central European populations (Fig. 7E2). The number of teeth in the stridulatory file did not differ between localities (Fig. 6B; Table 1).

The song consists of chirps sounding rather like 'trrrrt' and lasting at least 1 sec. They are seperated by pauses of about the same length.

The calling song consists of a series of quiet echemes, each lasting about 1-2 s, sometimes repeated regularly at the rate of one every 3-4 s, but at other times less frequently and more irregularly. Oscillographic analysis shows eachecheme to consist of about 60-140 alternately quieter and louder closing hemisyllables following one another at the rate of about 40-70/s. The quieter closing hemisyllables last about 4-11 ms and the louder ones about 7-17 ms; opening hemisyllables, always quieter than the closing hemisyllables, are often also present. The echemes are usually quieter at the beginning, reaching maximum intensity after about 10-20 syllables. Sometimes the echemes end in aseries of lous closing hemisyllables without the interposition of quieter ones (Figs 340, 342), and occassionally there are two quieter closing hemisyllables between two consecutive louder ones. There are no microsyllables.

Counts are recordings at or below each taxon, so an empty branch shows as empty before you click it. A dash means the join view holds no column for that rank and cannot roll up to it.
