Melanogryllus desertus (Pallas, 1771) (Figs. 3; 10; 17) - the species stridulates from June to September, in the evening and at night. The calling song is composed from echemes of 12-13 hemisyllables and the gaps between echemes are very variable, from 0.1 and 0.5 second at 30oC and sometimes more than 1 second at a temperature below 20oC. An echeme has 0.2 – 0.3 seconds. he stridulation begins in the afternoon and lasts until late at night; it can be heared from more than 15 meters. The pars stridens has approximately 2,5 mm (the area with stridulatory pegs) and 136 pegs.

Males sing during the day and night. The song consists of a series of melodious 'krrtree'-sounds (echemes), repeated more or less regularluy at intervals of about 1-2 x. The echeme consosts of 12-13 syllables of which the first 8-10 are quiet and the final 2-4 are loud. A courtship song is unknown.
