behaviour · bio.acousti.ca
The loud, sibilant calling song is produced both during the day (especially afternoon) and at night, and is much influenced by temperature. In warm, sunny weather the song usually consists of echemes lasting about 1-7 s, with a marked crescendo in the early part of each echeme (Figs 209, 210). As the temperature falls in the late afternoon the echemes become longer, and the nocturnal song (Figs 211, 212) often continues without interruption for several minutes. In warm daytime conditions the syllable repetition rate is usually more than 35/s and can be as high as 55/s in hot sunny weather; on cool nights the rate drops to below 20/s and can be as low as 10/s (rarely 6/s) in cold conditions (c 10°C). OScillographic analysis shows that the sound is almost always produced only by the closing strokes of the forewings. In warm conditions the closing hemisyllables last about 12-20ms, but become longer at lower temperatures, lastingup to 70 ms or more on cool nights. The intervals between successive hemisyllables are also temperature-dependant, ranging from about 5-10 ms at high temperatures to about 30-40 ms in cool conditions.

behaviour · bio.acousti.ca
Its song is an even, very loud buzzing, so that individual syllables cannot be distinguised. The rate of wing-vibration is similar to that of T. viridissima, but the individual syllables are equally saced, so that the song seems to be a uniform buzz. Only in very cool weather is the rate of wing vibration slow enough for individual syllables to be clearly audible.

Idänhepokatin ääni on hieman matalamppa kuin lehtohepokatin, äänenvoimakkuuden huippu on noin 8 kHz:n taajuudessa (toinen vaimeampi huippu on noin 16 kHz:n taajuudessa). Sirahdusten määra on lämpötilasta riippuen yleensä 10-50 sekunnissa. Tieteellinen lajinimi cantans (lat.) tarkoittaa 'laulavaa'.

Females of the katydid T. cantans appear to get the best of both proximity and male body size when choosing calls. They preferentially orient to songs with high-frequency harmonics indicative of nearby males (69), but when the song are broadcast from a similar distance, they prefer calls with lower carrier frequencies produced by the larger tegminal mirror frames of relatively large males (68; see also 101).

Counts are recordings at or below each taxon, so an empty branch shows as empty before you click it. A dash means the join view holds no column for that rank and cannot roll up to it.
